Caring For Your New Tattoo
There are several ways to take care of a tattoo. "What might be good for the goose isn't always good for the gander", so goes the old saying. This is a generalized aftercare to help you in the care of your new tattoo. The aftercare given here is what I have personally found to work best for my clientele.
- Wash fresh tattoo with extremely cold water after one hour after receiving your tattoo. The cold water will shrink capillaries, help reduce swelling and minimize "seepage and weeping" of bodily fluids such as blood and plasma. When washing use liquid soap only, (preferably non scented, anti-bacterial). Use only your hand, no wash cloth or abrasive materials such as a loofa. Be gentle but thorough. Pat dry with clean cloth or paper towel immediately after washing. Repeat 2-3 times daily for two weeks using luke warm water.
- After you have washed and dried your tattoo apply a very small amount of Aquaphor or bacitracin to the tattoo for 3-5 days or until the skin peels like sunburn, after which point you can use an unscented skin moisturizer. Gently massage ointment or moisturizer into skin. More is not necessarily better, in fact is often times worse. Too much petroleum product can clog your pores and not allow your skin to "breathe" in that area causing bumps, redness & hard healing.
- Tattoo may peel or form scabs, DO NOT PICK at tattoo or remove flesh!!! If tattoo itches, DO NOT SCRATCH tattoo!!! DO NOT SOAK TATTOO IN WATER (ie. no swimming for two weeks) DO NOT LET TATTOO GET SUNBURNED!!! (as these may ruin the tattoo)
